Welcome back to Marketing for Romance Writer’s Book Hooks. Today, I’m sharing another small snippet from my current, nearly completed work-in-progress, Scarlett and the Big Bad. I’ve commissioned a cover I’ll be revealing in the upcoming weeks leading up to the release. I don’t have an exact date yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

Monty, our werewolf hero, has a tragic past and a big secret eating away at him. Consequently, he isn’t the easiest to get along with fellow. He’s stubborn, bossy, and apt to solve an argument with a young woman over his knee. Aside from his close relationship with his younger sister, he lives a mostly solitary existence, but he has strong morals and a good heart. I hope you enjoy this small peek into Scarlett and Monty’s story.

What if Red Riding Hood was headed for danger, and the big, bad wolf was the only hero who could save her?

All of her life, Scarlett dreamed of improving her dire circumstances by joining the prestigious Order of the Phoenix. When she’s about to realize her dream, the most gorgeous man she’s ever seen ruins her first meeting with the priestesses of the order, insisting he’s rescuing her. Confused and overwhelmed, Scarlett is both afraid of and captivated by the man who claims to be her fated mate.

Monty Blackwolf didn’t ask for a mate, and he hadn’t wanted one, but his werewolf’s heightened sense of smell makes Scarlett tantalizing even from miles away. The worst part about the sticky situation is her religious devotion to the magical terrorist group responsible for the murders of his parents and older brother. She’s ready to run straight to the monsters who have raised her on a hidden farm for blood-ritual sacrifice, but he’s determined to protect her.

Compounding his difficulties, Monty’s afflicted with a unique, third shifter-form he doesn’t fully understand and isn’t able to control. Will he be able to save Scarlett or will he prove to be more of a danger to her than anyone else?

As tears pour from Scarlett’s glimmering, green eyes, he loosened his grip on her pretty locks, pushing his hand deeper into their softness before massaging her scalp. “Sorry, it’s not your fault you’re ignorant as hell.”

He’d hoped showing kindness would dry up the girl’s water-works, but the opposite was true. Instead, the floodgates opened, and the ugly crying came on like a deluge. He rubbed his temples and frowned as sniffles, snorts, snots, and all manner of other things he had no patience for right down to a trembling bottom lip managed to gross him out while gnawing at his conscience worse than boll weevils set loose in a textile mill.

Awkwardly, he reached out and patted Scarlett’s back. “It’s been a trying day for both of us. Let’s just try to relax. We can talk about all that other stuff later. How about you—” She rushed forward and buried her wet, red face in his chest, turning his shirt into a handkerchief as she continued to sob. He looked up at the ceiling, repressing the groan stuck in his throat as he stroked her hair. “Have a seat—That’s what I was going to say.”

“I want to go home. I want to see my mother.” The broken quality in her whimper hit a nerve.

“I’m sorry.” He didn’t know what else to say. Even if he had any idea how to send her back, he couldn’t—she was his mate.
